Since 2024, our team has been working closely with the Orang Pulau communities, alongside Chia Jie Lin, a researcher from the University of Hawaii, and other experts and professionals, including Dr Vivienne Wee, to develop this toolkit, which offers guidance for ethical, community-first collaboration.
Through more than five years of engagement with the community, we have seen how research and media practices can either uplift communities or inadvertently cause harm. This toolkit is designed to foster equitable partnerships, amplify community voices, and provide practical principles for ethical engagement with the Orang Pulau and other vulnerable communities.
Your support helps sustain initiatives such as Hari Orang Pulau, enables us to research and document the traditions and knowledge of coastal communities, and support former Southern islanders and their descendants.
